Ed Sias Invitational

September 13, 2008

On Saturday, the Panthers began their competitive invitational season with the ever-popular Ed Sias Invitational.  Hosted by Campolindo High School of Moraga, the Ed Sias meet historically features some of the finest distance teams in Northern California, with the 2008 affair being no different.  Schools from as far away as the Oregon border would descend upon Hidden Valley Park in Martinez in hopes of beginning the season with a bang.  One team, the Saint Mary’s Panthers, would certainly make those hopes reality.  Led by the Varsity girls, this year's Panthers would be THE talk of the meet.  In their Varsity girls Small School race, the Panthers would absolutely and completely live up to their #1 state  rank by dominating the competition.  Taylor Lawson (3rd place overall), Alex Choy (5th place), Alice Baker (9th place), Margot Sullivan (11th place) and Ashley Davis (14th place) combined to score just 32 points in the 15 team field.  The Varsity girls were 46 points ahead of 2nd place and #5 state ranked Maria Carrillo of Santa Rosa.  The JV girls would also have a fine showing, out-pacing all division four and five teams in the field and placing Freshmen Daisy Merida 7th and Mary Harrington 18th overall.

For the boys, their weekend was incomplete.  Without their full squad able to run, the Panthers sent a couple athletes to Ed Sias in search of individual success.  Junior Dan Maxwell made sure the treasure was found, running a very fine 10:28 on a course that saw school record-holder Matt Duffy run only 12 seconds faster.  Junior Tony Levine was also impressive, running 10:51 for 17th.  Two Freshmen, Duncan Calvert and Stevie Greene, also ran well, each covering the rolling, hilly two mile course in a swift 12:25.  Results can be found on the schedule page under the Ed Sias listing.  Next up for the Panthers is the Farmer Invitational at Hayward High School this weekend.  See you there!

Sacred Heart Cathedral Scrimmage Results

September 11, 2008

On Wednesday, the Panthers ran a scrimmage race against fellow LaSallian school Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco.  The event marked what hopes to be a long-standing, annual affair between the sister schools.  As usual, the Panthers and their supporters were out in full force.  Leading the way were the State’s #1 ranked girls team, who received impressive performances from Annie Woelffer, Alex Choy, Alice Baker, Ashley Davis and Taylor Lawson. Additionally, Freshman Isabella Smull turned in a courageous performance on the hilly and treacherous Joaquin Miller course.  Fellow freshman Mary Harrington and Claire Sullivan also had fine runs for the Lady Panthers.

For the boys, strong performances were displayed by Juniors Eddie Hill, Angus Sidore, Dan Maxwell and Tony Levine.  Freshmen Duncan Calvert, Stevie Greene and Nate Hill continue to impress, all covering the 2 mile course in fine fashion.

Overall, the event was great.  Parents brought food and drinks for the athletes after the meet, prizes (t-shirts, shoe bags, socks, etc.) were raffled, and the meet culminated with a much-anticipated race between Sacred Heart’s vice-principal, Mr. Cannon, and our own Mr. Imperial.  As the Panthers saw it, Mr. Imperial edged him out in the end for a well deserved victory.   You can see all the results below.

This Saturday the Panthers travel to Martinez for the annual Ed Sias Invitational.  Over 1900 athletes are entered into the meet.  Look for many of the Bay Area’s best teams to be there… including, of course, the Panthers!  The race schedule and itinerary are below.

Panthers State Ranked!

September 3, 2008

This morning, the online website dyestatcal.com released its initial Cross Country state rankings, by division, and both the boys and girls teams are ranked in the top 10.  The boys, who a year ago were the state runner-ups, are ranked 6th in the state for Division IV.  The girls, meanwhile, who also finished 2nd at the State Championships last winter are the top-ranked team in California in Division IV.  The rankings are updated about once a month, so check in on the Panthers progress.  Congratulations to both teams!

Monte Vista Invitational

September 2, 2008

On Tuesday, the Panthers traveled to Danville for the annual Monte Vista Invitational.  The meet usually plays host to some of the larger, powerful cross country teams from Division I and II.  This year’s meet followed suit, as perennial powerhouses Castro Valley, Amador Valley, Granada, Livermore, San Ramon Valley, host Monte Vista and a dozen other schools were entered.  As usual, the Panthers held their own.  The girls team was especially strong, with Juniors Taylor Lawson and Alex Choy along with Seniors Alice Baker and Ashley Davis recording the 3rd, 4th, 7th and 16th fastest times of the day, respectively.  With Junior Hannah Brumbaum’s solid performance, the Lady Panthers would have placed 1st overall had the meet been a scoring affair.  Instead, the girls would settle for plenty of medals and verbal accolades.

The boys were nearly as impressive, with Juniors Dan Maxwell, Will Brady and Eddie Hill leading the way.  All recorded personal bests on the tough, hilly two mile course.  Senior co-captains Kellen Asercion and Daniel Woelffer also had strong performances for the Panthers.

This meet served as the inaugural competition for the Freshman class.  Led by medalists Stevie Greene, Duncan Calvert and Nate Hill, the boys class of 2012 served notice that they will be a class that will leave its mark.  Each boy placed in the top 10, and each brought home medals in their first competition as a Panther.  Likewise, the freshman girls had a strong showing, led by Isabella (“Izzy”) Smull and Mary Harrington.  Each girl placed in the top 20 in the freshman race, which featured over 75 runners representing 14 schools.  Daisy Merida, and Alexis Cortez-Holmes also ran very good races.

Next up for the Panthers is a scrimmage against Sacred Heart Cathedral on Wednesday, September 10th at 3:30 at Joaquin Miller park in Oakland.

Tony Levine takes the early lead.

Alex Choy and Taylor Lawson at the mile mark.

Time Trials

August 29, 2008

On Thursday, Tilden Park was smoking!  Not only did it seem like the hottest day of the year (Temp: low 90’s), but the Cross Country team made it even hotter!  Thursday was the much-anticipated season-opening Time Trial.  The Time Trial kicks off the competitive racing season for the Panthers.  This event dates back 10 years with the inaugural run staged in 1999.  Records, All-Time lists and bragging rights are part of what makes this event special.  This years’ event was amongst the best ever.

No less than 18 athletes broke the top 10 all-time in their respective grades.  Leading the way was the junior class, with seven athletes amongst the best of all-time.  Next were the seniors and the freshmen with five athletes each, followed by the sophomores with one.  Overall, 48 athletes competed, making the coaches have 48 different reasons to smile.

Congratulations to all those who sweated out the 1.85 mile course!  Next up for the Panthers is the Monte Vista Invite on Tuesday, September 2nd at Oakhill Park in Danville.  First race is at 4:00 pm.  You can find a link below for full time trial results.
